Have you got anything planned on the 28th ? ABAKUS IT-SOLUTIONS might have plans for you. Let’s celebrate together the European Data Protection Day!

What is the European Data Protection Day ?

At the end of this week, the European Council and the European Commission will hold a special event. Since 2007, the Data Protection Day (called Privacy Day outside of Europe) has been celebrated every 28th of January. You certainly have heard about it at least once in the news.

The aim of this initiative is to raise awareness of the very specific issue of data protection. The European authorities are drawing the attention of the general public to the need to safeguard personal information when surfing online. European citizens should be aware that there are always risks when they are using their computers, smartphones and many other connected devices. Some behaviours are not safe. This is why the European institutions organise conferences on the right to privacy and provide training on the best practices to adopt. Recent laws about GDPR testify to this.

The current issue with data collection

We entered a new era where all our information are now stored on cloud servers and websites track our every move. However, most people do not realise this and do not take it into account when they surf the Internet. They do not really adapt their habits until they face problems such as identity theft, fraud …

Internet users tend to be lazy or careless. Everything should be accessible right away whatever they are looking for. Without paying real attention, one click, everywhere to accelerate the access to what they want. Valuable information can be put at risk and collected without realising while accidentally ending up on a brilliantly crafted phishing site. But some documents, figures or statistics can be highly confidential and it could be devastating if they ended up in the wrong hands.

Fortunately, after the introduction of the General Data Protection Regulation, a significant majority of European citizens have started to be aware of this. With their personal data being gathered by companies and social media, they are now worried that it can sometimes be used against them. This is absolutely right. People should care more about what they share and how and what pages they visit.

The GDPR..., you are probably wondering if it is that important. It is more than important, it's mandatory! Even if you own a small or medium-sized business that processes personal data of customers, employees or suppliers: names, surnames, bank accounts, e-mails, ... you better take it seriously.

If you don’t, you are liable to sanctions. In case of infringement, the Data Protection Authority can impose financial penalties of up to 4% of your worldwide turnover, or up to €20 million. Many penalties have already been imposed on SMEs and the self-employed.
